Does Money Change People?
/

I think it is inevitable that money almost always changes people, whether it be for better or worse.

For some people, money is everything. Earning, or losing money for money-oriented people may strike a change in attitude within them. Earning money may make them feel on top of the world; causing them to act cocky, and become show-offs. They may become greedy, selfish and calculative. This is because when people are chasing the wrong things, they will never be satisfied. The richest people in the world may not even be satisfied with their wealth, craving for more. Them losing money on the other hand, may lead them to think it’s the end of the world; they end up in a state of desperation and depression, and what’s worse is that they may not get back up again.

In reality, the wealthy and the working class alike may be so greedy for money, that they lose sight of why they want money in the first place. Suppose that a rich, self-made man is too busy working; he works on the weekends, late nights ‘till morning, 24/7. In the end he does earn himself a fortune. However, he will not have the time to actually spend and enjoy his money, because he will be busy working for more. Even worse, he may not set aside quality time to spend with his family and friends. He will end up stressed, tired, and most importantly, unhappy. Altogether he becomes a fool, a slave to money. He has lost sight of what's most important in life: his happiness and his loved ones.

This is why it is important to not chase the wrong things in this world; it is important to remember that when we are wealthy, we should not work for money, but money should work for us. Steve Siebold in his book “How Rich People Think”, wrote that “The rich see money as a positive tool that has the power to create freedom and opportunity for themselves and their families", and "After all, if you have a problem, and you can make it disappear by writing a check, then you don’t have a problem.” Money is a friend, so don’t let it become an enemy.

Therefore, it is also often that money changes people for the better. For instance, having more money will give a sense of assurance and security. People would not need to worry about not being able to meet financial needs such as housing, healthcare, education, or even food. For those who barely balancing their finances, this can reduce a lot of their stress, improve their standard of living, and thus make them generally happier. Furthermore, with lots of money people would have more opportunities to be generous in giving, and so they do. All in all, the world may be a kinder place filled with kinder people, as I believe we are blessed to bless others.

Contrary to popular belief, in reality I think it is irrefutable that money can buy happiness. But even if we are not rich, that doesn’t mean we should be unhappy, because money is most definitely not the only source for happiness. Whether we are wealthy or not, we should not let money control us and change us for the worse, but we should take control of money and make it change us for the better.
